Nîmes is a city in the south of France and covers an area of 160 sq km. In the past, it was one of the richest and most sophisticated Roman cities in Gaul. Today, in and around Nîmes, remains of some Roman buildings can be visited. Such are the elliptical amphitheater built in the 1st or 2nd century. It is the best preserved Roman arena in France. Nîmes Cathedral is of mixed architecture – partly Roman, partly Gothic. A modern landmark that deserves attention is the art museum.
